Second Session
This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 18-01-25 – 2’ is the second live model pastel drawing of this today’s session. As explained in my art statement to the first one we had model Janneke over after 8 years. Back then we invited her to studio Brugman, Voorburg, Netherlands. Municipal centre ‘De Blauwe Tram’ in Leidschendam hosts our model session nowadays. And why not? It’s even better equipped and the set-up time is less. My colleague Hélène with whom organize these sessions stores many easles and boards there. They can be set up in record time.
Point of Criticism
A point of criticism from my side though. Throughout the years nude live drawing events are less and less frequented by students. Surely, that is due to an ever growing prudity. Not in Voorburg or The Netherlands only, but a sad worldwide tendency. Donald Trump will be president next 20th January 2025. Makes me all the more curious if it gets even worse within the years to come. What do you think? Courses and workshops get more hobby-like oriented. Learning anatomy of course is hard enough but can also be avoided by simply declaring doing nudes is something dirty. So, fear takes over and lures beginners into simple workshops painting darling roses in watercolor. A snacky bite and a feel good many of my colleagues like to cater. Fortunately, there always be a group of people still interested in walking that extra mile practising hard.
Slight Cubist Experiment
The second session I felt more confident to have a slight cubist experiment. My second one eight years ago also showed geometric deformations but in my Roundism style. Looking back and regarding this latest one I see my way of cubism has become more subtle. It leans more towards impressionism than cubism. Not very difficult taking the excellent lighting from above into account. The lamps lit up some beautiful planes in the body I eagerly exploited. However, the focus also lies in the cloth she is sitting on. Often quickly overlooked but attire, blankets or cloths can offer great additional value. In this particular case the triangular folds emphasize the cubist aspects of the body parts.
