More than 80 people have been killed and 20 injured in Colombia’s northeast after failed peace talks with the National Liberation Army (ELN).

The violence in the Catatumbo region, near Venezuela’s border, has forced thousands to flee, with many seeking refuge in shelters or nearby mountains.

Community leader Carmelo Guerrero and seven peace deal advocates were among the victims, while three involved in the talks were kidnapped.

Clashes between the ELN and ex-FARC rebels over the strategic coca-growing region have escalated, with Colombia suspending talks with the ELN after renewed violence, CBS News has reported.
