On January 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 6.5-kilometer Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring year-round connectivity to the Sonamarg region. This two-lane tunnel, constructed at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, connects Gagangir and Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district. It was built at a cost exceeding ₹2,700 crore. The tunnel also features a 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is strategically significant as it bypasses landslide-prone and avalanche-affected areas on the route to Leh, thereby improving year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg. This development is expected to boost tourism in Sonamarg, known for attractions like the Thajiwas Glacier and whitewater rafting on the Sind River. Additionally, the tunnel enhances military logistics in the region.

Construction of the Z-Morh Tunnel began in May 2015 and was completed in 2024. The project faced challenges, including work stalling in July 2018 due to financial constraints faced by the developer, IL&FS Group. In August 2019, APCO Infratech was awarded the contract to complete the remaining work, with construction resuming in July 2020.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Prime Minister Modi also met with construction workers to acknowledge their dedication in completing the project despite challenging conditions.
