The film “Snowden” is a biographical thriller directed by Oliver Stone and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden. Based on the books “The Snowden Files” by Luke Harding and “Time of the Octopus” by Anatoly Kucherena, the movie covers Snowden’s time as a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) subcontractor and whistleblower who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013.

The film begins with Snowden’s time in the Army and follows his career in the CIA and NSA, where he uncovers the extent of the government’s surveillance programs. Realizing that the public’s understanding of privacy is far from the truth, Snowden decides to leak the classified documents to the media, which exposes the U.S. government’s covert surveillance activities. The movie features an ensemble cast including Shailene Woodley as Lindsay Mills, Snowden’s girlfriend; Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Logan Marshall-Green, Timothy Olyphant, Ben Schnetzer, LaKeith Lee Stanfield, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage.

“Snowden” was released on July 21, 2016, at the San Diego Comic-Con and had a wider release on September 16, 2016, in the United States and September 22, 2016, in Germany. It received mixed reviews, with some praising Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance and the film’s energy, while others criticized the script and pacing. The film’s budget was $40 million, and it grossed $37.3 million at the box office.
