Logging for Looper Moths in Stanley Park
364
The City of Vancouver is conducting a massive logging operation in Stanley Park, aiming to cut down 160,000 trees--nearly one third of the trees in Stanley Park. The advertised reason for the logging is to mitigate risk of fire and injury from trees killed or damaged by the western hemlock looper moth. However, current science refutes that such risks exist.
The western hemlock looper moth is a native species and periodic outbreaks are part of the natural forest ecosystem cycle. Dead standing hemlocks provide food and habitat for many species including pileated woodpeckers. Heavy logging machinery is damaging and destroying the natural ecology of this precious urban forest.
