An IMPD K9 is now stable after being stabbed during the investigation of a reported break-in on Indy’s south side Friday night.

The suspect of the break-in is also stable after a shooting involving an IMPD officer. IMPD named the suspect — 24-year-old Brandon Ramirez — via X, formerly known as Twitter, Saturday evening.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched around 7:54 p.m. Friday to Greene’s Auto and Truck Service, located at 111 W. Raymond Street, in response to a report of a break-in.

Officers at the scene reportedly saw signs of forced entry into the business. The business owner also saw someone inside the building on security cameras.

Police say K9 officers located the suspect near the front desk of the business and gave repeated commands to surrender, but the suspect did not comply.

“Ringo,” a police service dog, then engaged the suspect, and at some point, was stabbed at multiple times. At least one K9 officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect at least once.

The suspect was taken into custody in critical condition, but is now stable, according to police. He is currently receiving treatment at Eskenazi Hospital.

IMPD confirmed no officers were injured during the incident. However, the stabbed K9 was and taken to an emergency veterinary hospital in critical condition. Ringo has since improved to stable condition.

IMPD reported that the K9 underwent surgery Saturday morning to address three stab wounds. The dog will be closely monitored for the next 48–72 hours.

Police said the suspect was preliminary arrested for burglary, resisting law enforcement and cruelty to a law enforcement animal. The pending charges will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
