The Iron Claw Is The Best Wrestling Movie Ever Made (It's Not Even A Close Contest)
While it was a success at the box office and a critical darling, The Iron Claw is easily the best wrestling movie ever for a very specific reason.
Though actors such as Marie Avgeropoulos, Gavin Casalegno, Deborah Ann Woll, Francesca Eastwood, Martin Kove, Cara Buono, and Heels star Kelli Berglund also appear, Queen of the Ring features several professional wrestlers, including Kamille, Toni Storm, Trinity Fatu, and Britt Baker. Additionally, one of the executive producers is Jim Ross, who is widely regarded as the greatest professional wrestling commentator of all time. All of this should amount to a faithful portrayal of Mildred Burke's life, and especially her legendary exploits inside the ring.
Emily Bett Rickards' Arrowverse co-star Stephen Amell also played a professional wrestler in the Starz series Heels.
Our Take On The Queen Of The Ring Trailer
Ash Avildsen Follows In His Father's Footsteps
Kelli Berglund as Nell Stewart laughing in the ring in Queen of the Ring
With Queen of the Ring, Ash Avildsen, having previously directed American Satan and Paradise City, is now following in his late father John G. Avildsen's footsteps, who won an Academy Award for Rocky and also directed The Karate Kid. Similar to those two iconic movies, Queen of the Ring tells the inspirational story of an underdog athlete overcoming immense odds. Hopefully, Queen of the Ring is equally resonant, and Ash Avildsen inspires a brand new generation with Mildred Burke's incredible story.
Queen of the Ring releases in theaters on March 7, 2025.

Aside from Burke's career highs and lows, the trailer also chronicles her relationship with Billy Wolfe (Josh Lucas), her trainer whom she married before they split in 1952.
"You will do what I say," Wolfe tells Burke at one point in the trailer, "or you will find yourself cleaning toilets in some arena after my show comes through."
Near the end of the trailer, while speaking to another woman at a seemingly highbrow event in Washington, D.C., Burke says, "I'm actually the highest-paid female athlete."
"In Washington?" the woman asks, to which Burke replies, "In history."

"It also made me sad that I never knew about [Burke], yet she was such an influential icon for her era, nor did I know women’s wrestling used to be illegal," he continues. "I felt it was my duty to adapt this incredible book into a screenplay and set out to show the world this timeless American woman whom both the industry and culture had all but forgotten."

Now entering the arena: the first teaser for Queen of the Ring. The biopic stars Arrow's Emily Bett Rickards as pioneering women's wrestler Mildred Burke. The film will be released in theaters on March 7, 2025.
The trailer follows Burke from her roots as a dissatisfied waitress in 1935 to her quest to become one of the first women to enter the squared circle of professional wrestling. Entranced by the sport, she asks wrestling manager Billy Wolfe (Josh Lucas) to train her; a training montage follows, as Burke gets ready for the ring. Burke eventually became her trainer, manager, and husband - and then ex-husband. The sport was a long way off the slick, televised product it is now; wrestling meant county fairs, arenas that were more like barns, and grappling local yokels in the ring. But in this challenging environment, Mildred thrived, becoming one of the most renowned wrestlers of her time. However, there were barriers for the young grappler, as many at the time believed women had no place in the ring: slick promoter Jack Pfefer stepped in to help, but given that he's being played by Walton Goggins, can he be fully trusted? You'll have to find out yourself when the film hits theaters in the spring.
Who Else Stars in 'Queen of the Ring'?
In addition to Rickards, Lucas, and Goggins, Queen of the Ring boasts an impressive cast. Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil) stars as Gladys Gillem, Burke's rival in the ring - and also a rival for Wolfe's affections. Francesca Eastwood (Juror #2) plays Mae Young, another early female wrestler whose career stretched well into the 21st century. It also stars Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Kelli Berglund (Heels), Marie Avgeropoulos (The 100), Martin Kove (The Karate Kid), and Cara Buono (Stranger Things). The film also features a number of professional wrestlers in its cast, including Britt Baker; Trinity Fatu, alias Naomi; Toni Rossall, alias Toni Storm; and Kailey Dawn Latimer, alias Kamille.
Queen of the Ring was written and directed by Ash Alvidsen (American Satan). Avildsen's family has a history with combat sports: his father, John Avildsen, directed Rocky and The Karate Kid. The film is adapted from Jeff Leen's non-fiction book The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making of an American Legend. Ash Avildsen, Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins, and B.D. Gunnel produced the film, while Kelly Koep, Jeff Leen, Anthony Mastromauro, and noted wrestling announcer Jim Ross served as executive producers.
Queen of the Ring will premiere in theaters on March 7, 2024. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch the new teaser for Queen of the Ring below.
