Lumumba's Africa. Sahel fight against French rule. Ep 20 | RT Documentary
The Sahel region consists of 12 countries that are rich in resources with a combined population of about 300 million. Over ten years ago, five of these countries – Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Chad and Mauritania – joined forces to coordinate within the region. They promised to provide each other with military, economic, and other types of assistance in the event of an intrusion or undo external influence. This cooperation was prompted by the constant pressure being exerted by France, the region’s former colonial power.
Today, a new generation of African military leaders continues to openly oppose the former colonisers by all means possible. Some countries have even eliminated French as a state language. These actions have already been dubbed the ‘Sahel Revolution’. Will it change Africa? Can it really put an end to the influence of the former colonisers?
