What obstacles did the pioneers of Pan-Africanism face in the US and the Caribbean? Decolonisation initiatives to were greatly resisted by the former colonisers, who used all means possible to stop the Pan-Africanist leaders. Coups, negative campaigning, assassinations – they stopped at nothing. Martin Luther King became one of their victims. When the fight spilled over to the Dark Continent, Patrice Émery Lumumba was assassinated just nine months after becoming Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Today, traditional colonisation has been replaced by neo-colonisation, where economic shackles have taken the place of iron ones. This means the fight against Pan-Africanism is not over yet.
