- Potatoes (for mashed potatoes)
- Butter (for the mash, around 50g)
- Milk (add gradually for creamy consistency)
- Salt (to taste, for both mash and meat mixture)
- 1 kg minced meat (pork, beef, or your choice)
- 2 medium onions (finely chopped)
- 3 carrots (grated)
- 2 bell peppers (finely chopped)
- 450 g blended canned tomatoes
- Thyme, bay leaves, pepper(for seasoning)
- Fresh herbs (like dill or parsley, optional)
- 1 egg ( for the meat mixture)
- 2 eggs (beaten with 2 tbsp sour cream for topping)
- Grated cheese (for topping, optional)
Steps:
1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
- Peel, cube, and boil the potatoes until soft. Drain, leaving a little water for consistency. Mash by hand, adding butter, milk, and salt. Avoid using a mixer to keep the texture fluffy.
2. Cook the Vegetables:
- In a large pan, sauté chopped onions in oil until translucent. Add grated carrots, chopped bell peppers, and seasoning (salt, pepper, thyme, and bay leaves). Cook for 10 minutes, then stir in the blended tomatoes and simmer until the oil rises to the surface.
3. Prepare the Meat Filling:
- Once the vegetables cool slightly, add the minced meat and mix well. Incorporate fresh herbs, salt, pepper, and one egg. Combine thoroughly.
4. Assemble the Moussaka:
- In an ovenproof dish, layer mashed potatoes, followed by the meat mixture, and repeat, finishing with mashed potatoes on top.
- Beat two eggs with sour cream, pour over the top layer, and sprinkle grated cheese (optional).
5. Bake:
- Cover the dish with a lid or foil and bake at 200°C (390°F) for 45 minutes. Uncover in the final 10 minutes for a golden crust.
6. Serve:
- Let the moussaka cool slightly for clean portions. Serve with pickles or a fresh salad for a perfect meal.
