Former Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has revived the debate over a possible succession in the PSOE, pointing to Óscar López and Salvador Illa as the main candidates to replace Pedro Sánchez. During an interview on TV3, Iglesias analysed the political panorama following Sánchez's decision to send María Jesús Montero to lead the PSOE in Andalusia, a move that, according to him, removes her from the fight for succession.

Iglesias has described López and Illa as opposing figures: López represents a frontal ideological fight against the right, while Illa adopts a more traditional profile, with support from the Catalan establishment and the ability to dialogue with other parties such as ERC. According to Iglesias, Illa could have an advantage, thanks to his acceptance among economic sectors and his ability to negotiate support.

In addition, Iglesias has pointed out that sending Montero to Andalusia seeks to relegate her politically, describing her confrontation with the Andalusian president, Juanma Moreno, as a battle destined to fail. Iglesias believes that Montero weakened by exposing herself too much during the crisis that involved the indictment of Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez.

In this context, Iglesias has hinted that Sánchez might not run in the next general elections, although his intention would be to complete the legislature until 2027. However, this reflection coincides with the strategy of Podemos, which, according to Sumar, seeks to wear down the PSOE by promoting early elections. The formation led by Yolanda Díaz interprets Iglesias' statements as part of a strategy by Podemos to regain prominence against Sumar, taking advantage of its growing trend in the polls.

For her part, Irene Montero, former Minister of Equality, could lead the Podemos candidacy in future elections. Meanwhile, Iglesias, after leaving his organic positions in 2021, continues to gain visibility and would be willing to collaborate in this new stage of the party. Thus, Iglesias' words seem to point to a scenario of political tension that could redefine the balance of power on the Spanish left.
