Since Sihon and Og were defeated in Ch 21, Balak the king of Moab decided, with help from Midian, to defeat Israel by having them cursed by the famous seer, soothsayer… we will call him a seer by the name of Balaam.
J. Vernon McGee asked the question: “Was Balaam a genuine prophet of God? Or a religious racketeer? ”It seems that the instances where Balaam is talked about throughout the Word of GOD, he was a false prophet for hire. Some sort of diviner or soothsayer, a seer, exactly what he was is debated.
22:1 Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab and camped beyond the Jordan across from Jericho. 2 Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3 and Moab was terrified (great fear) because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread (koots = loathing towards the Israelites) because of the Israelites.
