Our Planet Climate Review 4.1.2025. - 10.1.2025
D1 - 7-8.1.2025, Los Angeles, California, USA
A massive forest fire broke out in Los Angeles on January 7th. The fire engulfed the coastal area of Pacific Palisades, a luxurious residential neighborhood located between Santa Monica and Malibu. Tens of thousands of residents from Southern California were forced to evacuate their homes. The Palisades Fire, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, started as a brush fire on Tuesday morning and grew to nearly 3000 hectares by Tuesday evening. Earlier, a high fire danger had been declared in the region due to strong winds and prolonged drought. Meteorologists predict even stronger winds in the coming days, with speeds up to 160 km/h.
D2 - 9.1.2025, Los Angeles, California, USA
As a result of multiple large wildfires raging through Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the USA, at least five people have died, and over 1100 buildings have been damaged. The wind-driven destructive fire in the Pacific Palisades area started on Tuesday and by Wednesday afternoon had spread to 15,800 hectares (18,588 football fields) without reports of containment.
D3 - 9.1.2025, Los Angeles, California, USA
Wildfires continued to rage through Los Angeles County on Thursday, marking a "Black Swan" catastrophic event of unprecedented scale in the history of the nation's most populous county. Described as some of the worst in the region's history, these fires have claimed at least 10 lives. Among the active fires, the Palisades Fire covered 19,978 acres (80.85 square kilometers) with only 6% containment by Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire burned 13,690 acres (55.4 square kilometers) and remains uncontained.
D4 - 11.1.2025. Increase in Wildfires
Recently, extinguishing natural fires has become increasingly challenging, even with modern firefighting equipment. According to scientists, these fires occur in fault zones of the Earth's crust (part of the Pacific Ring of Fire) where hydrogen, methane, and other flammable gases emerge from the depths. Therefore, these fires are extremely difficult to extinguish. Settlements and entire cities are being engulfed by flames.
Comment:
Watching the footage of the fires that ravaged California and listening to the comments of the victims, I notice that the authorities, as well as the people themselves, are still not aware of the seriousness of climate change. And from there comes: unpreparedness, disorganization, and unreadiness for events when they occur. An important aspect is that official science still does not understand the real causes of climate change.
