Feb. 18, 1965 - James Baldwin, the Negro writer, opposed William F. Buckley, editor-in-chief of the conservative National Review, in a televised debate tonight at the Cambridge Union Society in Cambridge, England, on the motion: “The American dream is at the expense of the American Negro.”
An over-capacity crowd of more than 700 students and guests of the Union were packed into the debating chamber, which is modeled after the British House of Commons. Five hundred additional people filled the other rooms on the Union premises. The debate was broadcast live by the BBC.
