A Norwegian expatriate, Sayeed Uddin, faced a brutal assault by security personnel at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday night, leaving him bloodied and injured. Later, authorities fined him Tk5,000 for allegedly obstructing a public servant.

The incident occurred around 9:15 pm when Sayeed, exiting through Canopy Gate 2, got into a verbal dispute with an Aviation Security (Avsec) officer. The situation escalated when Sayeed allegedly pushed the officer. In response, several Avsec and Ansar members dragged him to the concourse hall, where he was reportedly beaten severely.

Eyewitnesses described Sayeed's injuries as severe, with blood streaming from his head and face. A source who saw him shortly after the incident said, “He was bleeding profusely.”

Viral Video Sparks Public Backlash
Footage of the aftermath, showing Sayeed's bloodied condition and parts of the altercation, has gone viral on social media, igniting widespread outrage.

In the video, Sayeed is heard accusing the officers, saying, “You all are beating me together, five or six of you.” One officer responds, justifying the violence: “You pushed me. I’m in uniform.” Sayeed, however, denies this claim, asserting, “I didn’t push you.”

Later that night, Sayeed was fined Tk5,000 by the airport magistrate court under Section 189 of the Penal Code, which penalizes threats or obstruction of public servants. This section carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison or fines, or both.

Airport Authorities Provide Their Account
In a written statement, Group Captain Mohammad Kamrul Islam, the airport's executive director, claimed the incident stemmed from Sayeed and his group obstructing a gate with a trolley. He stated that despite repeated requests to move, Sayeed and his son verbally abused and then physically assaulted a security officer, leading to the altercation.

Public Reaction and Criticism
The incident has drawn sharp criticism, particularly from those questioning the behavior of airport security personnel. “What could be more humiliating for an expat than being beaten at the airport upon returning home?” commented an anonymous airport official.

The footage continues to circulate widely, with many condemning the assault and the subsequent fine imposed on the injured expatriate. Calls for accountability and a thorough investigation are growing louder as public sentiment turns critical of the security personnel's actions.
