Asked whether he was prepared to promise to refrain from using military and economic coercion to gain control of the island and canal, the US president-elect said he was not.

"People don't even know if Denmark has a legal right [to the island]. But if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security, to protect the free world," Trump said.
