My name is Sacagawea, and I am honored to share my story with you. I was born around 1788 in what is now Idaho, a member of the Lemhi Shoshone tribe. My early life was spent in the beautiful valleys and mountains, where I learned the skills of my people—how to gather plants, navigate the land, and respect the world around us. However, my life changed when I was just a girl. A Hidatsa raiding party captured me and took me from my family. It was a terrifying and heartbreaking experience, and I became a prisoner in their village near the Missouri River.
While living among the Hidatsa, I was married to a French-Canadian trapper named Toussaint Charbonneau, who had also been living with the tribe. Life was not easy, but I adapted and found ways to survive. Then, in 1804, something remarkable happened. A group of men, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, arrived in the area as part of the Corps of Discovery, a U.S. expedition to explore the Louisiana Territory and find a route to the Pacific Ocean. My husband and I were hired as interpreters, and despite being young and pregnant, I joined the expedition. I knew the land, spoke Shoshone, and could help them communicate with the tribes we would meet. I felt it was my chance to contribute something important.
Not long after we began the journey, I gave birth to my son, Jean Baptiste, whom we called “Pomp.” I carried him on my back as we traveled, and though it was difficult, I was determined to keep going. The journey was full of challenges—dangerous rivers, harsh weather, and endless miles of uncharted land. But I knew the land well, and when we encountered my people, the Shoshone, I helped the expedition secure horses for the treacherous journey over the Rocky Mountains. In an incredible twist, the Shoshone chief we met turned out to be my brother, Cameahwait. Seeing him again after so many years was a moment of deep emotion and joy.
As we continued west, I served not just as an interpreter but also as a symbol of peace. My presence, along with my baby, showed other tribes that this group of men was not a war party. When we finally reached the Pacific Ocean, I felt a great sense of accomplishment. I had been part of something far greater than myself—a journey that would change the course of history.
After the expedition, my life returned to being that of a wife and mother. Some say I traveled to St. Louis with my son to see William Clark again, as he had taken an interest in helping raise and educate Pomp. Others say I returned to the land of my Shoshone people. My life was short, and I passed away around 1812, but my legacy lived on.
I hope my story reminds you that courage and resilience can come from unexpected places. I was just a young woman with a baby, navigating a world dominated by powerful men, but I proved that even small voices can have a profound impact. Remember, your journey—no matter how difficult—can lead to something extraordinary.
