Itchy Sea Turtle Enjoys a Shell Scratch on the Coral

Mexico is home to sea turtles of various kinds. Green sea turtles here feast on sea grass during the morning and then swim out to deeper waters to find a place for a snooze. They hold their breath for up to half an hour at a time as they rest at depths of approximately 10-15m (30-45 feet). This turtle seems to have an itchy shell. It rubs its carapace on the rough coral as it settles down for a rest.
It's tempting to reach out and give these turtles a shell scratch to help them feel more comfortable, but responsible scuba divers will avoid touching the animals at all costs. No matter how much the turtle might appreciate the help, it must be left alone.
Green turtles are beautiful and graceful creatures that are a joy to witness as they swim in the ocean. Scuba divers are always thrilled with an interaction like this one.
