Why is the red tide so bad in 2018?

Red tide continues to plague beaches along the coast of Southwest Florida, and is suspected in the deaths of nine bottlenose dolphins found on Sarasota County beaches this week. Many blame the water releases from Lake Okeechobee for fueling the red tide blooms and fish kills. But a professor of Marine and Ecological Sciences at FGCU says the issue isn't that simple, and that there aren't enough nutrients in local waters for that to be a smoking gun.
