In 1998, Constantin Film set out to bring Resident Evil, the legendary horror video game, to the big screen. They enlisted acclaimed American filmmaker George A. Romero, the visionary director who redefined the zombie genre, to adapt the project. But despite the perfect pairing of horror’s greatest minds, Romero's vision for Resident Evil was never realized. Now, for the first time, Brandon Salisbury's documentary uncovers the hidden story behind the project that captivated fans and the horror industry alike. George Romero's Resident Evil is directed by American indie filmmaker Brandon Salisbury, a former US Marine, making his feature directorial debut with this doc project. It's produced by Thomas Touhey, Joel Welsh, and Brandon Salisbury. This hasn't premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. George Romero's Resident Evil the doc will debut direct-to-VOD starting on January 7th, 2025. It's available to watch now.
This is the final trailer for the upcoming documentary George A. Romero’s Resident Evil. This doc explores Romero’s attempt to make a film adaptation of the hit video game Resident Evil and why it fell apart.

Romero pitched his Resident Evil movie in 1998 to Constantin Films, and it looks like there were a lot of reasons why the project didn’t get made. The doc comes from director Brandon Salisbury, and it aims to “immerse the audience in a cinematic horror aesthetic.”

Salisbury said: “George Romero gave birth to modern horror, the modern zombie, and ultimately Resident Evil. I am honored to bring fans the untold story of his most important unmade project, to celebrate the legacy of the man that inspired me to pursue filmmaking as a career. I hope fans enjoy this ultimate experience in survival horror.”

The film will pay homage to Romero’s style and the game itself. It even takes place in a mansion that will be reminiscent of Resident Evil‘s Spencer Mansion, and it will be shot to mimic Romero’s filmmaking style.

Romero’s original script for the film has leaked online, and it stayed relatively close to the source material. It seems like it would’ve been really cool to see Romero actually make it. Unfortunately, Capcom didn’t care for the script due to its violent content.

Keith Leopard, President of Uncork’d Entertainment said in a statement: “Uncork’d is honored to bring George A. Romero’s Resident Evil to fans who have long awaited the untold story behind this legendary, unmade project.

“This documentary pays homage to Romero’s incredible vision and the power of storytelling that transcends what could have been. We’re excited for audiences to finally experience the mystery and legacy of his work in a whole new way.”

The movie will be released on digital and on-demand on January 7.
