Step back in time to the Normandy invasion of 1944 with Survive History, to find out if you could survive behind the frontlines during Operation Overlord.

In this episode, we delve into the gripping experiences of ordinary Allied soldiers during Operation Overlord, as they attempted to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. Join our presenter, Louee Dessent, as he explores the massive logistical challenges behind the D-Day landings. He looks into the role of MPs as they directed convoys of Allied armoured vehicles on both sides of the Channel, as well as the experiences of the largely African American drivers staffing the Red Ball Express. 6,000 GMC trucks were needed to supply the US army after the Normandy breakout, driving round the clock on long and exhausting journeys to deliver fuel, food and ammunition.
Louee also looks at the role of ordnance units who repaired all manner of vehicles, from small jeeps to 33 tonne Sherman tanks. Roadside recovery was performed with a range of hardy wreckers and transporters, including the Diamond T, Ward LaFrance and M25 Dragon Wagon.

Finally, we step into the shoes of Allied artillerymen crewing weapons like the 155mm Long Tom and M7 Priest. Artillery barrages were essential as the Allies attempted to break through solid German defensive lines in the Battle of Normandy.

This video was filmed at the incredible Armour and Embarkation 2024 event in Dorset, showcasing over 100 genuine Second World War vehicles and recreating a small part of the Normandy invasion force. Whether you're a history buff, a military history enthusiast, or simply curious about the human stories behind the battle, this episode promises to be an engaging and informative experience.
