Columbus police have released body camera footage of two officers shooting an armed man who threatened them with a weapon while they were responding to a domestic violence call on New Year's Eve in North Linden.

Police say they responded at around 10:45 p.m. to the 1200 block of Northridge Road on a report of a domestic violence incident. Officers made contact with a woman who said that Tatum had assaulted her, according to police. When officers entered the home, police said they discovered that Tatum was hiding in the basement.

Officers ordered Tatum to come out of the basement and speak to them, but he initially ignored their commands, body camera footage shows. Tatum then comes up the staircase and responds to officers, but one officer sees that Tatum is holding what appears to be a pistol.

Tatum also announces that he has a gun, the bodycam video shows, and threatens officers by saying he will "blow all you (expletive) away!"

As one officer quickly orders Tatum to drop the gun, he extends the weapon out in his hand, bodycam video shows. Two officers then immediately shoot him, one through the open door and the other through drywall. Tatum flees back into the basement and barricades himself.

Officers gave Tatum multiple commands for him to come upstairs with his hands up. Tatum eventually begins walking up the stairs slowly, bleeding from at least one gunshot wound in his arm, the bodycam footage shows. After placing him in handcuffs, he falls to the ground and officers begin providing first aid.

As one officer rode in an ambulance with Tatum, police said the suspect bit the officer.

Sgt. James Fuqua, a Columbus police spokesman, said Friday that police now believe the weapon was a BB gun.

Tatum was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he is in stable condition. He will face initial charges of felonious assault, domestic violence and assault. Police say he may face additional charges pending an investigation.
