Japan Upgrades Type 10 Tanks with Active Protection Systems and 30mm Guns to Counter Modern Threats

Japan is intensifying its efforts to modernize its fleet of Type 10 main battle tanks to effectively address the growing spectrum of battlefield threats, especially the increasing danger posed by anti-tank weapons and unmanned aerial systems (UAVs). On June 28, 2024, the Ministry of Defense of Japan unveiled a new procurement plan aimed at upgrading these tanks with advanced defensive technologies. Central to this modernization effort is the installation of an active protection system (APS) and the integration of a 30mm remote-controlled gun system.
