The quick overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria marked a dramatic end to the 50-year rule of the Assad family. The offensive, supported by Turkey and led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), began in late November 2024 and quickly gained momentum. Starting from the northern province of Idlib, near the Turkish border, the rebels advanced through major cities, including Aleppo and Hama, before capturing the capital, Damascus, to unseat the Assad regime. All of these dominoes fell in Syria in just over a week. What do these rapid changes mean for Israel and the world?
