Reading of the 1535 Coverdale Bible - Day 6 of 365 (Genesis 19-21) Season 3 - "A Night of Reckoning and New Beginnings"

In tonight's reading, we delve into the unfolding dramas of Genesis, starting with the impending doom of Sodom and the promise fulfilled for Abraham and Sarah.

Genesis Chapter 19

As evening fell, two angels arrived in the wicked city of Sodom. Lot, recognizing their divine nature, warmly invited them into his home, offering safety and hospitality. Despite his pleas, the angels initially intended to stay in the streets, highlighting the dangers that lurked there. As the night deepened, the men of Sodom surrounded Lot's house, demanding to harm the angels. In a valiant but desperate act, Lot offered his daughters to protect his guests, showcasing his commitment to hospitality. The angels intervened, striking the men with blindness and warning Lot to flee the city, as it was destined for destruction. He was urged to take his family and escape without looking back. Ultimately, Sodom and Gomorrah were consumed by fire and brimstone, leaving only ashes behind, while Lot and his family were spared—though disaster struck his wife when she looked back, turning her into a pillar of salt.

Genesis Chapter 20

After the dramatic events in Sodom, Abraham journeyed south to the land of Gerar. There, he claimed that Sarah was his sister, fearing for his safety because of her beauty. This deceit caught the attention of Abimelech, the king of Gerar, who then took Sarah into his household. However, God intervened in a dream, warning Abimelech of the truth and revealing that Sarah was already married. Abimelech, horrified at the revelation, confronted Abraham and demanded an explanation. Abraham justified his actions, citing fear for his life. Nevertheless, Abimelech returned Sarah to Abraham and blessed him, restoring their safety and favor in the land.

Genesis Chapter 21

The narrative shifts back to joy and fulfillment as God remembered His promise to Sarah. Despite their old age, Sara miraculously conceived and bore a son, named Isaac, a testament to God’s faithfulness. The birth of Isaac brought laughter and joy to Abraham and Sarah, who celebrated this long-awaited miracle. Upon Isaac's weaning, tensions arose between Sarah and Hagar, leading to Hagar and her son, Ishmael, being sent away. However, God continued to watch over them, assuring Abraham that Ishmael would also become a great nation. This chapter closes with God’s ongoing covenant with Abraham, marking a significant moment of both challenge and triumph in the lives of these foundational figures.
