China is grappling with an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in several parts of the country. Authorities have urged citizens to wear face masks and practice frequent handwashing to curb the spread. Studies indicate that HMPV has been present for at least six decades and has become a common respiratory pathogen worldwide. It primarily spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing, as well as through close contact with infected individuals or exposure to contaminated surfaces. The virus poses the greatest risk to children and the elderly. Its incubation period typically ranges from three to five days. Viral videos claiming to show overcrowded hospitals in China due to the HMPV outbreak have fueled concerns about the possibility of another pandemic, just five years after COVID-19 brought life to a standstill. But it is important to note that no emergency has been declared by the WHO.
