Reading of the 1535 Coverdale Bible - Day 5 of 365 (Genesis 16-18) Season 3 - "The Covenant of Promise and the Visitors of Destiny"

In tonight's reading, we delve into the unfolding saga of faith and divine promise in the lives of Abram and Sarai, marked by pivotal moments that would shape their destiny.

Genesis Chapter 16

As Sarai grappled with the heavy burden of childlessness, she proposed a bold solution to her husband Abram. In her desperation, she offered her Egyptian handmaid, Hagar, to Abram, believing that through her, she might fulfill the promise of descendants. Abram, hearing Sarai’s voice, took Hagar as his concubine, and soon Hagar conceived. This development ignited tension between Sarai and Hagar, as Hagar's pregnancy brought contempt from Hagar towards Sarai. In distress, Sarai confronted Abram, who allowed her to deal with Hagar as she wished. Sarai mistreated Hagar, prompting Hagar to flee into the wilderness. There, she encountered the Lord, who instructed her to return and submit to Sarai, promising that her descendants would be too numerous to count. Hagar, moved by this divine revelation, named the Lord who spoke to her, declaring Him the God who sees her. Upon Hagar’s return, she bore a son named Ishmael.

Genesis Chapter 17

Years later, at the age of ninety-nine, Abram received a powerful visitation from the Lord. The Lord reaffirmed His unwavering commitment to Abram, declaring that he would be the father of many nations. As a sign of this eternal covenant, God changed Abram's name to Abraham, indicating his role as a father of multitudes. God also established the covenant of circumcision as a mark of belonging to Him, commanding that every male be circumcised as a sign of this promise. Moreover, God promised that Sarah, whose name was also changed from Sarai, would bear a son whom they would name Isaac, and through him, the covenant would continue. Abraham, overwhelmed by joy yet grappling with disbelief at their old age, fell on his face in reverence, accepting God’s profound promise.

Genesis Chapter 18

The narrative progresses as the Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre. On a scorching day, as Abraham sat in the entrance of his tent, he saw three men approaching. Recognizing the significance of their arrival, he rushed to welcome them, offering food and hospitality, humbly seeking to serve them. As they ate, the men revealed the astonishing news: within a year, Sarah would bear a son. Sarah, overhearing this affirmation, found it hard to believe given her advanced age, prompting laughter that was both joyful and skeptical. The Lord, addressing Abraham, reaffirmed His promise, emphasizing that nothing is too difficult for Him. He also shared the impending judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah, showcasing Abraham’s role as an intercessor willing to plead for the righteous within those cities. Thus, this chapter highlights not only the promise of a child but also the deepening relationship between God and His faithful servant.

Through these chapters, we witness the complexities of faith, human response, and divine assurance, as the story of Abraham and Sarah continues to unfold under God's watchful gaze.
