Body and dashcam video released of fatal Carson City New Year’s Day officer-involved shooting

CCSO deputies were called to a verbal domestic dispute at the 4000 block of Old Clear Creek Road, in rural southwestern Carson City, on Dec. 31. Deputies arrived at the address around 10:50 p.m. and witnesses told them that the suspect, identified as Michael Bright, 64, of Carson City, was not on the property but had made threats via text messages that if law enforcement made contact with him, he was going to “shoot it out”.

Bright reportedly returned to the area shortly before midnight. Authorities say deputies attempted contact with him on Old Clear Creek Road, a short distance away from the residence where the domestic dispute had taken place. There was an immediate exchange of gunfire and Bright barricaded himself at his pickup truck.

Additional assistance law enforcement and medical teams responded to the area, including Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Washoe Tribal Police, Carson City Fire Department and Tactical Paramedics.

Authorities say deputies attempted to negotiate with Bright from a distance from 11:55 p.m. to 12:15 a.m, but the barricaded suspect refused all instructions. Bright emerged from his barricaded vehicle position around 12:17 a.m. on Jan. 1 and a second shooting took place.

Tactical Paramedics attempted to render immediate medical aid to Bright but determined he was dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Officers discovered the suspect was armed with a 9mm handgun when they approached his body.

The body was released to the Carson City Coroner for transfer to the Washoe County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Authorities say that if Bright had survived, he would have been charged with multiple counts including attempted murder on a protected person.
