A heart-wrenching video has surfaced, showcasing Zimbabweans risking their lives to cross the border into South Africa. This desperate attempt to seek better opportunities is a stark reminder of the economic struggles faced by our nation.
The harsh reality is that many Zimbabweans have lost their lives while attempting to cross the border, falling prey to treacherous terrain, wildlife, and criminal activity. Women and children have been victims of rape and exploitation, highlighting the vulnerability of our people.
It is essential to acknowledge that these individuals are not criminals, but rather impoverished people seeking to improve their lives. The restrictive 3-month visa policy in South Africa, which prohibits Zimbabwean passport holders from working, exacerbates the situation.
In contrast, neighboring Botswana has demonstrated remarkable compassion and Ubuntu values by granting permits to Zimbabweans. This exemplary approach serves as a beacon of hope for our region.
To address the root cause of this issue, it is crucial to create more jobs and businesses in Zimbabwe. Our nation is endowed with vast tracts of underutilized land, presenting an opportunity for black Zimbabweans to engage in farming and food production.
Initiative capital is essential to empower these small-scale farmers. We urge Western powers, donors, investors, and businesses to inject capital into Zimbabwe, supporting black farmers and fostering economic growth.
The establishment of a specialized bank offering easy loans to farmers would be a significant step forward. This would enable entrepreneurs like myself to expand our operations, creating more jobs and producing essential food.
