The Power of His Name: Faith, Fear, and the Presence of Christ

We’ll reflect on the insights of St. Philip Neri, Mother Angelica, and St. Paul’s exhortation from Colossians, uncovering what it means to live in the presence of Christ, even amidst fear and uncertainty.
Segment 1: The Power of His Name
St. Philip Neri tells us:
"The name of Jesus, pronounced with reverence and affection, has a kind of power to soften the heart."
This simple yet profound truth invites us to reflect on how often we call upon the Name of Jesus with love and trust. The power of His Name is not just in its sound but in the Person it represents. In Hebrew, “Jesus” means “God saves,” reminding us of His mission to redeem us.
When we speak His Name with reverence:
Our hearts are softened to His grace.
Our burdens feel lighter because we are reminded of His care.
Our spirits are lifted, knowing we are not alone.
Traditional Catholic devotion, like the Litany of the Holy Name or simply repeating "Jesus" as a prayer, is a powerful way to draw closer to Him.
Segment 2: Faith and Fear Can Coexist
Mother Angelica offers a relatable and honest perspective:
"Faith means that in the midst of darkness and turmoil, you know that God is there and is taking care of you...Faith and presence go together, but it doesn't do anything for my adrenaline glands!"
As Catholics, we sometimes confuse faith with a lack of fear or worry. Mother Angelica reminds us that true faith is not the absence of fear but the trust in God’s presence despite it.
The saints experienced fear, doubt, and trials, but they clung to God’s promises.
Faith acknowledges that we don’t have all the answers, but we trust that God is guiding us, even in darkness.
She also explains the deep meaning of asking in Jesus’ Name:
To pray in His Name is to pray as Christ would—full of love, peace, and trust in the Father’s will.
When we pray in His Name, the Father sees His Son in us and hears our prayers as if Christ Himself were asking.
This should inspire us to live authentically as Christians, reflecting Jesus in our words and actions.
Segment 3: Living in His Name
St. Paul writes in Colossians 3:16-17:
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
This passage offers us a blueprint for living in the Name of Jesus:
Let His Word Dwell Richly: Immerse yourself in scripture, especially the Gospels, where the life and words of Christ come alive. This helps us to live out our faith authentically.
Admonish with Wisdom: Encourage and correct one another in love, always seeking to build each other up in the faith.
Gratitude in All Things: A heart filled with gratitude recognizes God’s hand in every moment, even the difficult ones.
Do Everything in His Name: From the mundane tasks of daily life to the most profound moments of prayer, offer all to God through Christ.
This approach transforms our lives into a continuous act of worship and gratitude.

As we reflect on these teachings, we are reminded of the call to embody Christ in every aspect of our lives. Whether we face trials or moments of peace, invoking the Name of Jesus helps us stay grounded in His love and purpose.
Speak His Name in times of trouble, and let it calm your fears.
Let your actions reflect the faith you profess, so others may see Christ in you.
Faith and fear may coexist, but the Name of Jesus remains a constant source of strength and consolation.

Lord Jesus,
Your Name is above all names,
The Name that brings peace to the restless,
Strength to the weary,
And hope to the fearful.
We ask You to dwell in our hearts richly,
To guide our thoughts, words, and deeds,
So that in all we do, we may glorify Your Name.
Help us to trust in Your presence, even in times of uncertainty.
