Discernment Run Amok

Hey friends! One of the problems that plague zealous young Christians in every generation is taking extreme positions in their discernment. In this video I will explain what is meant by discernment run amok, examine the root causes of discernment running amok, and present some practical steps we can take to avoid being led astray by discernment run amok. I will give some examples of extreme positions that I was guilty of as a young believer, and I will present a few examples from our day that I have seen making the rounds on social media.

Discernment is absolutely essential in our day, as we face false doctrine and compromise on every hand. But discernment runs amok when zealots regard men of God (and godly men) as near-apostate compromisers because they are gracious in their handling of bad doctrine, tolerant in their associations with men who differ from them doctrinally, and only regard teachings contrary to the fundamental doctrines of the faith as heresy or apostasy. It is okay to fault bad doctrine as bad doctrine. It is not okay to fault good men who are going to be in heaven as near-apostate compromisers who have departed from the faith.
