This is a track recorded in November 2021 for our 49th album: Alone In A Quiet Place. This includes our brief arrangement of Prince Rupert’s March, written by an anonymous English composer circa 1645, during the first Civil War coupled with a quote from an apposite poem by Robert Burns. Simon Kirk – Anglo Saxon Recitation.
Akira Ishii – Flute, Tenor Recorder.

Try as I might, I had no notion what to do
on the field of Edgehill in 1642.
I waded through a fearful hill of blood and gore
on the field of Marston Moor in 1644.

Crécy 26th August 1346; Poitiers 18th September 1356
Agincourt 25th October 1415; Trafalgar 21st October 1805
Waterloo 18th June 1815: very well, you damned Frogs – bring it on!
Ye hypocrites! Are these your pranks,
to murder men an’ gie God thanks?
Desist, fae shame; proceed no further.
God won’t accept your thanks for murder.

I struggled manfully to live and stay alive
on the field of Naseby in 1645.
I surveyed a broken nation nobody could fix
at the siege of Newark in 1646.

Text& Music – Andy Martin.
