Jimmy Carter, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to advance economic and social growth as well as human rights, was arguably the most successful former president in American history. However, most people recall his one stint as president (1977–1981) as a string of mistakes and setbacks, sometimes even down to the literal. Perceptions of Carter as a weak and ineffectual leader were bolstered by gas lines, a record-high combination of inflation and unemployment on the "misery index," and Americans being held captive by Iranian revolutionaries for more than a year. For many, his fall after a six-mile run embodied the nation's fatigue under his leadership.
