Witches Mystical superstition / Witches possessed by the devil or Spiritual women and men

In myths and fairy tales, people with magical powers are referred to as witches. Since the late Middle Ages, it was believed in Europe that witches had made a pact with the devil or demons. It was also believed that women who practised naturopathy and poisons were witches. Between 1440 and 1750, more than 100,000 people were burned at the stake in Europe, over 80 per cent of them women, but the number of unreported cases is certainly much higher. There was an extreme witch craze in Europe, where no one was safe from accusations. Nowadays, there are once again people who see themselves as witches (Wiccans) and are involved in naturopathy and spirituality. I would be interested to know why thousands of people were burned in the Middle Ages - were they real witches who had a pact with the devil, or were they simply women and men who were more advanced than the rest of the population due to their knowledge of naturopathy?
