Authorities declared a state of emergency in the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador before a major winter storm left significant snow accumulations. The state of emergency was maintained on Saturday during the morning the capital of San Juan Terranova, as a result of a violent snowstorm that buried under a record layer of snow, considered by various local media as historic. Cars and some homes "disappeared" under large accumulations of snow, caused by winds that at times exceeded 100 kilometers per hour. From last Friday, December 17 in the morning it was known that a significant amount of snow was rapidly accumulating in the airport area, presenting accumulated over 70 centimeters in various parts of the city, in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Local authorities recommended that people avoid leaving their homes, ordering the closure of shops and businesses, prohibiting the movement of vehicles that did not belong to emergency services. The Mayor of San Juan Terranova, Danny Breen declared that "anyone who was outside their home, needed to turn, return home and stay there until the state of emergency arose."

The intensity of this storm is cataloged "unprecedented" for a region that is used to intense gusts of wind and significant accumulated snow. Reportedly, the last time that San Juan de Terranova was forced to declare a state of emergency was in 1984, as a result of an ice storm.

The Canadian Meteorological Service warned through its forecast that the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas, in the southeast of the island of Newfoundland, would be the ones that would be most affected by the winter storm, since according to the analysis of the information, the fall was expected of more than 70 centimeters of snow.
