South Korea Plane Crash: US Investigators Join Probe; Death Toll Climbs To 179

At least 179 people lost their lives when a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crash-landed and burst into flames while arriving in South Korea from Thailand on December 29. Of the 181 people on board, only two flight attendants survived the tragedy. Officials believe a bird strike may have caused the crash, as the plane landed without its landing gear, veered off the runway, and hit a wall before catching fire. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced it would lead an investigation team, including experts from Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), to assist South Korean officials in determining the cause of the accident. Jeju Air’s top officials issued a formal apology during a press conference in Seoul, while South Korea's acting President Choi Sang-mok convened an emergency cabinet meeting. South Korea has also declared a seven-day national mourning period till January 4. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident.
