STEIN: “Basil, we heard Allie talk about the trouble growing on MAGA world of her H-1B temporary foreign worker visas, it has been intense online. You have these Big Tech advocates, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy saying America needs skilled workers from other countries in order to advance. Meanwhile, we have Trump’s far-right native as base crying the H-1B visa program. Could this dispute escalate into a full-blown MAGA civil war? Has Trump put the lid on it now that he came out and said, I actually like these programs that I tried to get rid of them when I was president?”
SMIKLE JR.: “I still think that risk is going to be there. Let’s be clear. This is not the start to me of any meaningful conversation about immigration reform. This is a very small group of very wealthy people with the president’s ear saying this is what I need to make my company and myself richer. That’s what this really is. What’s interesting is that there is no one on the right — maybe there is and I just don’t know — but there does not seem to be anybody on the right to call out exactly what is happening and say, wait a minute, you were the person that said build that wall. In fact, back in 2016, you came out with an executive order to basically create what we call this Muslim ban and we saw the chaos after that. So how, all of a sudden, are you actually inclined to support this very specific thing? Again, it runs contrary to what the MAGA world was thinking that Trump would do. It runs contrary to what they want. We have already seen Vivek Ramaswamy talk about America’s mediocrity. Where has that ever been part of our narrative? And so when Democrats were spending a lot of time saying, this is how he talks about you, this is what he thinks about you. I imagine more of this is going to come.”
