The Brady Bunch represented an American era where the standard of living had reached perfection. It’s not that there wasn’t ugliness, poverty, war, and domestic strife. It’s just that the scales were tipped in favor of the good over the bad, and The Brady Bunch was the face of that achievement. Jan and Marcia didn’t really have a lot to complain about. Single mom of three beautiful blond girls hit the motherlode when she married architect Mike Brady. The late ‘60s, early ‘70s sitcom legacy lives on in the emblematic suburban house, which has become something of a contested legacy in recent days. Emblematic? Need we say, ‘iconic’?

The popular realty website Zillow has a listing for the Brady Bunch House. Located at 11222 Dilling St, North Hollywood, CA 91602, its estimated price listed for $2,318,415. That’s quite an appreciation form the $61,000 the McAllister family paid for the house in 1973. The site also says the house was sold on August 10, 2018, for $3,500,000. Zillow also claims it is the second most photographed house in America, after the White House. According to recent news, TV network HGTV made the winning bid, but before that we saw a heated bidding war between at least eight prospective owners.

There were premature reports that former NSync band member Lance Bass had secured the winning bid, but later reports let that hope down. According to Mr. Bass, the agency selling the house informed him he had made the winning bid, but later retracted when an unknown corporation, later to be revealed as HGTV, would own that distinction. Mr. Bass said he was feeling heartbroken, especially since HGTV made their bid after the bidding deadline. Sighs.

Still, we can’t imagine the beautiful modern ranch or, sometimes described as, Spanish revival sitting on about an acre plot of land should be immediately recognizable to baby boomers who grew up watching the six kids engaged in typical rivalry, adolescent crushes, suffering the indignities of being mildly disciplined as only first world parents can, and even having their superficial egos bruised by errant footballs. The two oldest children, Greg and Marcia even reached teen idol status.

The house floor plans can be found online. They reveal a perfectly livable layout by today’s standards. The house has a lounge, a living room, kitchen, pantry, four bedrooms, a linen closet, two store rooms, two bathrooms, a study nook, and a garage. One acre isn’t a lot of land, but the front and back yards make efficient use of the space with gorgeous landscaping appointments. However, HGTV is said to want to expand the house’s footprint, adding as much as 4,000 feet to it on the backyard side. If you have idyllic fantasies about joining Mike and Carol, Greg and Marcia, Peter and Jan, Bobby and Cindy, accompanied by faithful housekeeper Alice in the kitchen, please dispel that notion. The interior looks nothing like it did on the show. The house, after all, was only used for exterior shots. Interior shots were filmed at Studio City in Los Angeles.
