Russian President Vladimir Putin apologised to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane that claimed 38 lives, referring to it as a “tragic incident.” The Kremlin stated that Russia’s air defence systems were active when the plane attempted to land in Grozny amid reported Ukrainian drone attacks. Survivors described hearing loud bangs before the crash, with experts pointing to damage consistent with Soviet-era Pantsir-S1 systems. The Azerbaijani presidential office cited "external interference," while US officials suggested Russian air defences mistook the aircraft for a drone. Ukraine’s foreign minister accused Moscow of concealing evidence, labelling the incident a crime. This is not the first time Russia has been implicated in downing passenger planes, as seen with Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in 2014 and Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in 1983.
