Body-worn camera footage shows corrections officers hitting an inmate, Robert Brooks of Greece, multiple times on a medical exam table, just hours before he died.

It happened at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County on Dec. 9. Brooks died the next day in the hospital.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James released the footage on Friday during a virtual news conference. James released videos from four different officers, which were redacted based on the AG office’s guidelines. James said the cameras were on but on standby mode, so they didn’t record sound.

The video shows the corrections officers beating Brooks on his head, chest, and genital area in the medical exam room. At one point in the video, a corrections officer hits him with a shoe. Later, the video shows the officers taking off his pants and shirt. According to court documents obtained by News10NBC, Brooks was handcuffed with his hands behind his back while he was beaten.

The full affidavit is below. Warning: some may find the details disturbing:

The State Attorney General’s Office investigates any case where an officer may have caused the death of a civilian. James opened an investigation into Brooks’ death on Dec. 16.

“My team met with Mr. Brooks’ family earlier this week, and they viewed the footage. These videos are shocking and disturbing,” James said.

Brooks had been incarcerated at Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome and was transferred to Marcy Correctional Facility the day he was beaten. He was serving a 12-year sentence that began in 2017 for stabbing a woman in Greece in 2016.

One correction officer has resigned, and 13 others have been suspended without pay after the encounter. Gov. Kathy Hochul is advocating for their firing.
