How Family and Friends Sabotage Stops You From Changing Your Life and Working on Yourself.
When you talk to friends and family about plans you have to achieve your life goals, very often they don't provide helpful insights, but instead give you feedback based on fear of failure or even fear of success.
Ask yourself this.
What if their advice wasn’t aimed at helping me, but instead was more about aiding themselves?
Think about this: You’re having a conversation with someone who has the majority of their wealth invested in real estate. You inquire, “Do you think investing in real estate is a good idea? ”
Naturally, their response would be yes. For them to respond “no” would mean they are conceding that they made a mistake by investing all their money there.
Or, consider this scenario: if they don’t recommend that you invest in real estate, you choose to invest elsewhere (such as in Facebook’s stock), and you earn significantly more than they do? They’d feel even worse knowing they could have enjoyed the same level of success, but did not act on it.
Here’s another illustration. Whatever negative habit or trait you possess, inform someone close to you who shares that same trait that you are going to change it.
If you do not get more than 8 hours of sleep, let your insomniac friends know you’ll begin going to bed at midnight.
If you are overweight, inform a similarly overweight friend that you’re planning to go on a diet.
If you drink regularly, tell your friends who struggle with alcoholism that you’ll be stopping.
Propose the most unconventional idea to your social circle.
Responses could include “oh, haha, good luck,” or “yeah, okay, we’ll see how this plays out,” or more subtle reactions like “hey good for you! ” followed by lighthearted teasing.
What’s happening here? Your friends don’t intentionally wish for your failure; rather, if you achieve success, it removes their excuses for not addressing their own shortcomings. It’s easy to be overweight and claim “oh I can’t lose weight” until your friend who is also overweight successfully sheds a significant amount.
Out of a desire for self-preservation and laziness, your friends and family may not want you to achieve too much success. They are likely supportive of your happiness, but not to the extent that it prompts them to question their own lives.
Life Goals Achievement Success Guides. As well as helping you defeat: Lack of focus | Fear of failure | Lack of commitment | Lack of a plan | Procrastination | Lack of confidence | Analysis paralysis | Unrealistic goals | Lack of motivation. So you can live the life you love and love the life you live.
