Yunus Proposes Lowering Voting Age to 17 in Bangladesh | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has suggested lowering the voting age in the country from 18 years to 17 years. Yunus said he wanted Bangladesh's youth to have a stake in their own future.
"To give their (youth) opinion on their own future, I think the voting age for them should be fixed at 17 years," he said in a video message played during an election dialogue at Dhaka based Krishibid Institution Bangladesh, on Friday, December 27, 2024. The head of the interim government also said that the final decision rested with the Election Reform Commission, which is expected to submit their recommendations by January 2025.
While 18 years is the minimum voting age for several democracies across the globe, countries like Argentina, Austria and Brazil allow their citizens to vote after 16 years of age.
Bangladesh is expected to hold elections in late 2025 or early 2026.
