My name is Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, though most people just call me Eliza. I was born on August 9, 1757, in Albany, New York, into the prominent and well-respected Schuyler family. My father, Philip Schuyler, was a general during the Revolutionary War, so the ideals of independence and service to country were part of my upbringing. I grew up in a loving household with my siblings, surrounded by discussions of politics, honor, and the responsibilities of leadership.

My life changed forever when I met Alexander Hamilton in 1780. He was serving as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington, and his intelligence, charm, and ambition immediately caught my attention. We married later that year, and from then on, I became his partner in every sense. Life with Alexander was exciting but not without its challenges. He was always working—whether drafting essays, planning battles, or helping to shape the foundation of our young nation. I stood by him, raising our children and supporting his work. It wasn’t always easy, especially with the intense political battles he faced, but I believed in his vision for America.

When Alexander became the first Secretary of the Treasury, I watched as he crafted the economic policies that would shape the future of our nation. I was immensely proud of him, even when his work took him away from home for long periods. As a mother, my priority was our children, and I worked hard to provide them with the stability and love they needed, even as the world around us was often chaotic. Our family faced many trials, including political attacks and personal tragedies, but we endured.

Then, in 1804, my world shattered. My beloved Alexander died after a duel with Aaron Burr. Losing him was the most painful moment of my life, but I knew I had to stay strong for our children. I devoted myself to preserving his legacy, collecting his writings, and ensuring that future generations would know the truth about his contributions to America. I also turned my attention to charitable work, helping to establish orphanages and support education. Alexander always believed in the potential of young people, and I wanted to honor that by giving back to the community.

By the time the War of 1812 came, I had lived through so much—revolutions, political upheavals, and personal loss. But through it all, I remained committed to the values that Alexander and I shared: service, sacrifice, and a belief in the promise of this nation. I may have lived in the shadow of great men, but I know that my role as a wife, mother, and advocate was just as important in shaping the America we all believe in. My story is one of resilience, love, and an unwavering commitment to the ideals that built this country. I hope it reminds you that even in the face of great hardship, there is always a way to contribute and leave a meaningful legacy.
