Epic year-round backcountry camping at Jacques Lake | Cabin Series - Jasper National Park

We continue our winter cabin series in Jasper National Park, once again in the Maligne Lake area but this time on the eastern side of the range down to Jacques Lake. This 25.2km out-and-back trail near Medicine Lake, generally considered a challenging route & takes an average of 6hrs 45 min to complete. It took our group over 6hrs on the hike to the cabin but when we left, we staggered the group & were able to cover the distance in just over 3 hours. This is a very popular area for backpacking, camping, and hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. Especially up to the Summit Lakes where many locals will use the trail for cross country skiing.

We stayed inside the old warden's cabin that's now managed by the Alpine Club of Canada (https://www.alpineclubofcanada.ca) which gives us multiple bunk beds and access to propane heating & stove. The cabin is only utilized in the winter (November to March) but there's also a backcountry campground managed by Parks Canada that is utilized all year round.

We spent three days in the area, exploring the various lakes, creeks & snow covered peaks. We also had 5 people total in our group making things inside the cabin alot easier overall than backpacking alone! Enjoy our full review of the winter exploration you can enjoy hiking to Jacques Lake.
