Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Thirty Five.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Andre Cheret.

Courage and Fear.

The ground suddenly stopped shaking.

The great monster had stopped, but the hunters fleeing it continued their course.
Rahan understands their fear! He has never seen such a powerful, such a terrible creature!

The fugitives disappeared, and the monster returned to who knows where.

The hunters were afraid of this nightmare beast. But Rahan will teach them how to fight it!
The son of Crao never failed to pass on his knowledge to "Those-Who-Walk-Upright."
There is no monster over whom cunning and courage cannot triumph!
He soon discovered a village. But.

Page Two.

He was greeted with hostility.
Capture this intruder! Take his weapon!

In an instant, Rahan was surrounded, threatened by the entire clan.
Hum. Rahan notices that you are more courageous in front of a lone hunter.
Than in front of the horned monster!

But since you want his weapon. Here it is!
Rahan does not fight "Those-who-walk-upright"!
This attitude of the son of Crao disconcerted the chief, who even seemed embarrassed.

Uh. The "horned monster" you speak of is a creature sent by evil spirits!
It is invulnerable!
No! It is just a beast of flesh and blood!

And all beasts, no matter how powerful, are vulnerable!
Not the one that has been terrorizing us for ages, "Fire Hair"!

Our arrows and our spears have never succeeded in breaking his armor!
And the fire, far from frightening him, on the contrary excites his fury!

Page Three.

The "Horned Monster" never leaves its territory, which is the most game-rich!
For our hunters who venture there, it is the "Territory of Fear"!

Memories assailed the son of fierce ages.
You can only free yourself from this fear by destroying this creature!
Rahan has often faced monsters.
Who told how, one day, he had imagined a weapon to repel an attack of "Giant Goraks".

He mentioned the "Net Launcher" with which he had mastered the most formidable "Four-Hands."
The son of Crao spoke of this deep gorge in which he had trapped a creature reputed to be impregnable.

Page Four.

The clan listened to him, interested but skeptical.
Hum. Since the "Monster" never leaves its territory, how could we lure it into such a gorge!
And since you have seen it, you know very well that no net would resist it!

You are right! But there must be a way. There is always a way!
The son of Crao, reflected, and in his inventive mind.

Combined two ideas, and he had already imagined a new one.
Yes, that is it!
We should combine the power of the "Net Launcher" with that of a giant spear!

Rahan immediately set to work.
A hunter must never despair! When his strength is not enough. He still has cunning!

Still skeptical, the clan watched him harden the tip of a huge spear in the fire.
If Rahan succeeds in overcoming his fear, he will kill the "Horned Monster" tomorrow!
So you admit to being afraid!

He who says he is never afraid is a liar! Yes, Rahan is afraid.
But fear is just an obstacle that must be overcome!
Page Five.

This fear of the son of Crao was legitimate.
It grew even more when he went alone.
In the dawn, into the territory of the creature.

This one had left footprints so deep that a "Little Man" could have hidden there!
This is where Rahan will set his trap!
The arrangement of the trees and their branches made his plan easier.

The clan, who had followed him from afar, saw him busy with a strange task.

And now, Rahan must bring the "Horned Monster" to his trap!
The tracks led him straight to a pond still shrouded in mist.

And suddenly.
More disturbingly, behind this misty curtain, the creature appeared!
Rahan has come to challenge you “Three Horns”!
Ra-ha-ha!

Page Six.

The son of Crao screamed to excite the monster.
He succeeded.
The mountain of flesh and leather shook.
You will no longer terrorize "Those-who-walk-upright", "Three-horns"!

Rahan fled, luring the creature that had chased him towards his trap.
But he was still far from that when.

Argh!
He collapsed before the charging monster, its hideous head.
Low to the ground.
He could not help but be crushed, flattened.

“Fire-Hair" paid for his temerity! He.

He oh!
Rahan had just reappeared, clinging to the beast's longest horn!

This parry had temporarily saved him from getting clawed.
Rahan only escaped from the "Territory-of-Shadows" for a moment! If he lets go, he is lost!

Page Seven.

The beast, furious, charged straight ahead.
Anguish gripped Rahan, who risked being thrown to the ground at any moment, under the monstrous paws

The horned monster is moving away! If we lure it towards the trap, it is "Fire-Hair" who risks dying!

The son of Crao understood the hunters' hesitations. He screamed.
Go ahead brothers!
Attract him!
Lost for lost, Rahan prefers to take this chance!

As soon as the torches were waved the creature changed course and charged the men.
That is it! It is heading straight for Rahan's trap!

Rahan saw the catapult tree approaching.
If the trap works a moment too soon. It will be Rahan who will be pierced by the stake!

Page Eight.

Rahan had perhaps only a few seconds left to live. A thousand images assailed him: the eruption of the blue mountain. The death of Crao-the-sage. The hunters had fled.

They saw the "Horned Monster" hit the vine and drag it away.
The catapult tree bent further. And.

The vine gave way, brutally freeing the tree.
Schplak!
Propelling with unheard-of violence the fearsome spear, that flew towards the son of the fierce ages!

Sparing Rahan by a narrow margin, the spear had gone right through the creature!
Zlang!
This one continued his race for a moment longer.
It slowed down, and finally stopped.

Ra-ha-ha!
Letting out his victory cry Rahan rolled onto the ground.

Page Nine.

Oh. Rahan believed in victory too quickly!
Despite the spear that pierced his throat, the creature charged him again!

Rahan's fear was such that he did not see the obstacle.
He collapsed once again, a hundred paces in front of the monster.

Instinctively, he drew his knife and.
Realized how ridiculous this reaction would be.
Rahan is going to join you Crao!

The “horned monster” no longer charged.
It approached heavily, making strange trumpet sounds.
Unless, unless.

But, only ten paces from Rahan, he collapsed on his side!
The spear had finally done its work.
"Fire-Hair" is saved! "Fire-Hair" has killed the "Horned-Monster"!

The hunters came running, howling with joy. But the son of Crao did not hear their cries.
Rahan will join you another time, Crao. Another time.

Page Ten.

His mind was haunted by the terrible experiences he had just experienced.
You were right when you said that no creature is invulnerable, Rahan!
You just proved that a cunning hunter can do anything!

But he must not be a coward as we have been!
He must, like you, ignore fear!
Rahan was too modest to be triumphant.

"Fear" and "Cowardice" should not be confused, brother!
Fear is natural. It is in each of us.
Only unconscious hunters could not feel it!

"Cowardice" Is not trying to overcome your fear!
"Courage" is trying to conquer it!
And today brothers, Rahan was devoured by fear!

He has triumphed over her, but tomorrow he will have to face it again!
The fight against his fear is the hunter's first battle. It never stops!

Thus spoke the son of Crao, in those fierce times when, for "Those-who-walk-upright," the notions of courage, cowardice and fear were still obscure.
