Nietzsche and The Nazis - Where was God During Holocaust
This is a discussion about Nietzsche and the Nazis with Stephen Hicks. We talk about Nietzsche's philosophy influence on Nazi ideology, how the Nazis interpret Nietzsche's works (or was Nietzsche a precursor to National Socialism), connections between Nietzsche's concept of the "Übermensch" and Nazi beliefs and whether Nietzsche supported anti-Semitic views. Friedrich Nietzsche is famous for his statement that “God is dead” — and for the fact that Adolf Hitler and the Nazis claimed Nietzsche as one of their great inspirations. But were the Nazis right or did they misappropriate Nietzsche’s philosophy? We discuss key elements of Hitler and the National Socialists’ political philosophy and how the Nazis come to power in a nation as educated and civilized as Germany. Also Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy (the philosophy of “Live dangerously” and “That which does not kill us makes us stronger”). Did Nietzsche’s philosophy provide a foundation for the horrors perpetrated by the Nazis? The main topis are therefore Niezsche Nazi ideology, Nietzsche and National Socialism, Nietzsche Übermensch Nazi interpretation and Nietzsche's influence on Nazi propaganda. We also go through what he meant by we can create our own values and how morality and religion is not correlated. Was Nietzsche really an atheist? Zarathustra, speaks with figures who represent philosophical and psychological views. The main theme of Thus Spoke Zarathustra is the portrayal of values as either creative and life-affirming, or ascetic and conformist.
