LVMPD arrested a man Tuesday afternoon after shooting at him after he damaged a patrol car in the east valley.

According to police, officers received a call to the 3200 block of La Barca Lane, near Nellis Boulevard and Desert Inn Road, referencing a “property exchange.”

When officers arrived, two people told them there was a man inside armed with a gun.

LVMPD captain Kurt McKenzie, in a briefing, said its officers tried to get the suspect to surrender, but he kept going in and out of the house. During one instance, he used a knife and damaged a patrol car parked in the driveway by puncturing its tires and breaking its windows. Police said the man then put what looked like a gun on a stoop outside and continued going in and out of the house, appearing to reach for it.

Officers, according to McKenzie, tried to use verbal and less lethal commands for him to get the man to stop reaching for the gun. But, in one instance, LVMPD said an officer fired at the man and bullets did not hit the man. SWAT arrested him. An hours-long barricade turns to shooting when officers received a call about a property pickup between two individuals on the 3200 block of La Barca at around 10:24 a.m.

There was one man who was armed with a gun inside the residence. Officers tried to subdue the man.

The subject would enter and exit the residence with a knife, damaging a patrol vehicle, and at one point, the subject had a long gun that he placed on the stoop of the residence.

The subject tried to get the long gun when police gave verbal commands and used less lethal munitions like beanbag rounds to try to stop the subject from getting the gun.

The police did shoot at the subject, but the subject was not struck.

He quickly ran into the residence.

A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were en route and were to take the man into custody.

He was transported to Sunrise Hospital with minor injuries.

This is the 17th police shooting in 2024.
