Red Notice 2 was officially announced in January 2022, and it is likely that it will be available to stream in 2024.

Because of the success of the first comedy thriller movie, we expected the streaming service Netflix would be keen to get Red Notice 2 up and running as soon as possible. We know that writer and director Rawson Marshall Thurber has finished the Red Notice 2 script and that he’s working on the third film now so he can shoot both movies back to back.

There were reports that the shooting would begin in 2023, but that hasn’t materialized. At this point, with the 2023 Writers Strike in full swing, it’s unlikely that production will begin until the winter of this year (schedules allowing), which means there’s no chance of a 2023 release.

However, Gal Gadot did reveal that she has read the Red Notice script. So who knows? The wheels could be turned sooner rather than later.

Even before Red Notice was released on Netflix, Dwayne Jhonson, whose production company produced Red Notice had a conversation with SiriusXM where he said there is a high chance that the audience will get to see a sequel. In his statement, Dwayne said-

“I will tell you that just based off of reaction so far and what we’ve been able to cull from the audiences, there’s a good chance that we will see a return of this.”

After this, Deadline in one of their articles said that according to their undisclosed source, Netflix is currently working on two more Red Notice movies with Dwayne, Ryan, and Gal. The sequels will see new characters and operate as adrenaline-filled heist movies. According to them, these movies will draw inspiration from the super-popular Ocean’s Eleven franchise. However, Netflix has made no official comment on the given details.

These claims were given more credibility when Gal Gadot in a conversation with Collider in 2023 confirmed that the script for Red Notice 2 has already been completed. She stated-

“We’re all talking about it. I don’t know if I can say anything! I already read the second script and it’s, whoo! We’re all very excited about it!”

However, filming the sequel could not start in 2023 because of the SAG-AFTRA strikes. On top of that, Ryan Reynolds has been busy with completing his dream project, Deadpool and Wolverine, and since he is busy with its promotions worldwide, so there is no way the fillings could begin before Deadpool 3 is released on July 26, 2024. Considering all of these factors, we can hope to see a release of Red Notice 2 by the end of 2025 or by mid-2026.

The sequel was pretty much confirmed by how the first movie came to an end. In the movie we see Ryan Reynold’s Booth being betrayed by Dwayne Johnson’s John and Gal Gadot’s Bishop. The duo left Booth behind and took Cleopatra’s Egg to the Egyptian billionaire finally claiming their $300 million. However, in a turn of events, they exposed the billionaire and got him arrested by Interpol.

By the end of Red Notice, fast forward to six months, we see John and Bishop relaxing and out of nowhere, Booth bumps into them and tells them that Interpol has frozen all their assets and the only choice they have now is to take up the offer for another job he has for them. As the movie ends, we see the trio scouting the place where their next target is located, The Louvre Museum in Paris.

Even though we do not have the plot details as of now, it’s pretty obvious that the movie will revolve around them conducting a heist in The Louvre Museum so let’s wait and see what Netflix has in store for us and till then, stay tuned with us for further updates!

Red Notice is a 2021 American action comedy film written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber starring Dwayne Johnson alongside Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Ritu Arya. It marks the third collaboration between Thurber and Johnson, following Central Intelligence (2016) and Skyscraper (2018). In the film, an FBI agent reluctantly teams up with a renowned art thief in order to catch an even more notorious thief.

Originally planned for release by Universal Pictures, the film was acquired by Netflix for distribution.[2] It began a limited theatrical release on November 5, 2021,[3] before digitally streaming on the platform on November 12, 2021. It received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics for its plot and screenwriting, though the performances (particularly Johnson and Reynolds), action sequences and humor were praised. Netflix claims the film became the most-watched film in its debut weekend, as well as the most-watched film within 28 days of release on the platform on Netflix. It also became the 5th most-streamed movie title of 2021.[4] Two sequels are in development and will be filmed back-to-back with Johnson, Reynolds, Gadot, and Thurber expected to return.[5][6]

Plot
During the 1st century BC, Roman general Mark Antony gives Egyptian queen Cleopatra three bejeweled eggs as a wedding gift. The eggs are lost in time until two are found by a farmer in 1907, but the last one remains lost for over 2,000 years.

In the present, John Hartley is an FBI profiler who investigates the theft of one of the eggs on display at the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, along with Interpol agent Urvashi Das. Having stolen the egg, globally wanted art thief Nolan Booth manages to escape but finds Hartley and the Interpol at his home in Bali. They arrest Booth, but not before Booth's main rival Sarah "The Bishop" Black steals the egg and frames Hartley.

Das has Hartley incarcerated in a remote Russian prison with Booth, believing he is responsible for the theft. Hartley suggests that he and Booth work together to defeat Black. If he helps Hartley imprison her, Booth will be the number one art thief in the world and Hartley's name will be cleared. The pair escapes from prison and heads for Valencia to steal the second egg, currently in possession of arms dealer Sotto Voce.

They infiltrate his masquerade ball and fight Black in Voce's vault for the egg. Black reveals she is working with Voce and they torture Hartley until Booth reveals the location of the third egg. Black betrays Voce and leaves for Egypt, where Booth claims it is.

Booth reveals to Hartley that he lied; the egg is actually in Argentina in a secret location inscribed on his late father's special watch, which once belonged to Adolf Hitler's personal art curator Rudolph Zeich. Searching the jungle, they find a secret bunker containing Nazi artifacts, including the third egg. Black arrives to steal it but the three are interrupted by Das and police. Hartley, Booth and Black escape in an antique 1931 Mercedes-Benz 770.

Booth learns that Hartley is actually not an FBI profiler, but a conman, and shares the Bishop mantle with Black; Hartley and Black are a couple and work as a team. They had planned the entire heist from the very beginning, using Booth to take them to the third egg. Booth surrenders and they leave him handcuffed.

In Cairo, Hartley and Black deliver the three eggs to an Egyptian billionaire as a gift for his daughter's wedding. They then double-cross him; Interpol raids the wedding and arrests the billionaire.

Six months later, Hartley and Black find Booth on their boat in Sardinia. He informs them that he told Das about their Cayman Islands account containing the $300 million payout for the eggs, which Das freezes, leaving them with no money, in retaliation for leaving him cuffed.

Booth also reveals that Interpol is on their way to capture them, and offers escape if they help him with a new heist, which requires three individuals to pull off. They agree and Das places red notices on all of them. The trio begin casing the Louvre in Paris for their next heist.

Additionally, Daniel Bernhardt has a cameo appearance as Drago Grande, and singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran makes an uncredited cameo as himself.[7]

Production
Development
On February 8, 2018, it was announced that major studios were fighting a bidding war for the rights to an action comedy from Dwayne Johnson and writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures were all considered. The film would be produced by Beau Flynn through his FlynnPictureCo. banner, and by Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner, along with Thurber's Bad Version Inc., with Wendy Jacobson executive producing.[8] The following day, it was announced that Universal and Legendary had won the bidding war.[citation needed]

Gal Gadot was confirmed to star opposite Johnson in June 2018,[9] and Ryan Reynolds was added in July 2019.[2] Ritu Arya and Chris Diamantopoulos were also cast in February 2020.[10]

Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot were all paid $20 million each to star in the film, while Thurber was paid $10 million to write and direct.[11][12] After working on the film, Gadot became the third highest-paid actress in the world in 2020.[13]

At a budget of $200 million, Red Notice was Netflix's most expensive original film until 2022's The Gray Man.[14][15]

Filming
Principal photography began on January 3, 2020, in Atlanta, Georgia.[16][17] Production on the film was previously expected to start in April 2019, after Johnson wrapped filming on Jumanji: The Next Level.[18] On July 8, 2019, filming was delayed to early 2020.[2] A planned shoot in Italy was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.[19] On March 14, it was announced production had been halted indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic overall.[20]

Filming resumed on September 14, 2020.[21][22] Reynolds and Gadot completed filming their scenes by the end of October.[23] Production in Atlanta was completed on November 14, before moving to Rome and Sardinia, Italy for a week of shooting.[24] Filming in Italy was completed on November 18.[25] The film was greenlit with an estimated production budget of $160 million and by the time it was released the reported cost had reached $200 million, making it the most expensive film in Netflix's history.[26][1][27]

Visual effects artist Richard R. Hoover served as the overall visual effects supervisor for the film.[28]

Red Notice is one of the first feature films to extensively use the first-person view (FPV) drone flying for cinematography. FPV drone pilot Johnny Schaer participated in filming.[29]

Music
On February 26, 2020, Steve Jablonsky was announced as the composer for Red Notice. Jablonsky previously collaborated with director Rawson Marshall Thurber scoring Skyscraper in 2018.[30] Other pieces include "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys, "Época" by the Gotan Project, "Amado Mio" by Pink Martini, "Downtown" written by Tony Hatch, The Raider's March by John Williams, "Libertango by Astor Piazzolla", "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, and "Notorious B.I.G." by The Notorious B.I.G., with "On the Run" by Naz Tokio heard throughout the closing credits.[31]

Release
Universal originally scheduled the film for release on June 12, 2020.[32] The date was postponed by five months to November 13, 2020.[33] Netflix then took over on July 8, 2019,[2] moving the film to an unspecified date in 2021.[34] As part of a video and letter to its shareholders in April 2021, Netflix's co-chief executive officer and chief content officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that the film would premiere sometime in Q4 2021.[35][36] The film received a limited theatrical release on November 5, 2021, prior to streaming on Netflix on November 12, 2021.[37] Reynolds requested that Welsh language subtitles be provided for the film's Netflix release.[38]

Marketing
In the Philippines, the SM Mall of Asia's globe was reportedly stolen by a helicopter on November 13, 2021.[39] The Pasay city police issued a statement that the globe was not stolen and was just "undergoing maintenance for marketing strategy".[40] The globe was covered in scaffolding.[41] The mall management released a statement a day later that the globe is "back" and revealed that the supposed theft was staged as part of a publicity stunt to promote Red Notice.[42] The marketing promotion caused the globe to be a trending subject on Twitter.[41][43]

The film also saw a promotional tie-in with professional wrestling promotion WWE, the company where Dwayne Johnson had wrestled and became famously known as "The Rock". In addition to promoting the film during their Survivor Series event on November 21, 2021, a storyline was also played out involving one of Cleopatra's eggs that was stolen during the show.[44]

Reception
Audience viewership
Due to the film's $200 million production budget and Netflix's global film chief Scott Stuber's statement that the company's "big-budget tentpole films [need] to draw an audience of more than 70 million viewers within the first 28 days of availability," The New York Observer estimated Red Notice would need to total around 200 million hours (about 83 million household viewers) to be deemed a success.[27]

The film became the most-viewed film on Netflix during release day.[45] According to Samba TV, it was watched by 4.2 million households in the United States, 721,000 in the United Kingdom, 332,000 in Germany, and 42,000 in Australia over its first three days of release.[46] TV Time reported that it was the second most-streamed film in the United States during its debut weekend.[47] The top 10 Netflix weekly rankings for English-language films showed that it was the most-streamed film with 148.72 million hours watched. This was the highest viewership for any film on Netflix during its debut weekend. It was also ranked in the top 10 Netflix charts in 94 countries.[48] According to Nielsen it was the most-streamed film in the United States, with 1.8 billion minutes viewed and age ranges of 18–34, 35–49 and 50–64 making up a quarter each of its audience.[49][50]

Within eleven days of its release, it displaced Bird Box to become the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of release.[51] The fourth week saw Red Notice being displaced to the third position on Netflix's chart.[52] Netflix revealed on December 28, 2021, that Red Notice accumulated a viewership of 364.02 million hours in its first 28 days of release.[53] According to Samba TV, the film was watched in 9.8 million households in its first 30 days of release.[54] Nielsen stated that it was the fifth most-streamed-film in the US in 2021 with 5,528 million minutes viewed.[55] It remained in the top 10 rankings for English-language films on Netflix for three months since its release before dropping out.[56] The film also topped the new Netflix viewership metric released in June 2023 with 230.9 million views.[57]

Box office
While Netflix does not disclose theatrical box office grosses of their films, Deadline Hollywood estimated the film grossed $1.25–$1.5 million from 750 theaters in its opening weekend.[1] By November 15, the running theatrical gross was "well north" of $2 million.[46]

Critical response
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 37% of 175 critics have given the film a positive review, with an average rating of 4.8/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Red Notice's big budget and A-list cast add up to a slickly competent action comedy whose gaudy ingredients only make the middling results more head-scratching."[58] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 37 out of 100, based on 38 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[59]

Peter Debruge of Variety called the film a "fun, fast-paced and frequently amusing divertissement," and wrote, "It's all reasonably clever, so long as you don't scrutinize it too closely. Red Notice may be Thurber's spin on National Treasure, with just as much DNA from the RKO classic Gunga Din."[60] David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter stated, "You can't argue with the muscular marquee value of headlining Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot in a slick, fast-paced action thriller laced with playful comedy, even if it's an empty-calorie entertainment like Red Notice."[61] Reviewing the film for the Los Angeles Times, Justin Chang wrote, "A depressing reminder of what Hollywood considers 'original' material these days, Red Notice plays one of those self-consciously convoluted, ultimately derivative long cons that strain so hard to seem breezily insouciant they wind up wearing you out. By the end, it's the clichés that warrant a rest."[62]

Accolades
Red Notice received a nomination for Best Action at the 2022 Golden Trailer Awards.[63][64] Thurber was nominated for Oglethorpe Award for Excellence in Georgia Cinema at the 2021 Georgia Film Critics Association Awards.[65]

Future
Beginning in August 2020, there were reports that Netflix was looking to develop a sequel to Red Notice.[66] In November 2021, Hiram Garcia announced that there were tentative plans for a sequel, stating that Thurber had officially pitched a sequel and that all creatives involved were optimistic regarding its development, while announcing that Netflix had officially told them that they were interested in continuing the film series.[67] The producer later said that the potential sequel would include the trio of stars involved in additional heists around the world, while reaffirming that its development was dependent on the reception to the first film.[68]

Johnson celebrated the positive audience reception to Red Notice on his social media, saying that there was "more to come."[69][70] Following announcements that the release set the record all-time viewership for Netflix, Johnson further teased a future film announcement.[71] Thurber later said that if a sequel was greenlit, he intends to film two sequels back-to-back.[72] In December 2021, Hiram Garcia once again discussed plans for a sequel, stating that the end of Red Notice sets up the story.[73]

By January 2022, it was announced that the two sequels are officially in development and will be filmed back-to-back. Thurber will once again serve as writer/director, while Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot will reprise their respective roles. The sequels will also feature a number of supporting cast, with an ensemble cast planned similar to the Ocean's franchise. Johnson, Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia, Thurber, and Beau Flynn will return as producers. The films will be joint-venture productions between Seven Bucks Productions, Flynn Pictures Co, Bad Version Productions, and Netflix Original Films. The films will be distributed by Netflix.[74][75][76][77][78] In October 2022, it was announced that the script for the second film was finished, while work on the screenplay for the third movie is ongoing. In the same interview, producers Hiram Garcia and Flynn confirmed that the sequels are being developed to be filmed consecutively.[79]

Red Notice 2 Delay: Was There A Feud Between Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds?
Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson reportedly didn’t get along on the sets of Red Notice. The Deadpool & Wolverine star was miffed with The Rock’s habit of arriving late on the sets. Reportedly, the Jungle Cruise star once arrived five hours late on sets, which made Ryan furious, and they fought. The fight allegedly led to Ryan and Dwayne not talking to each other for years.
Red Notice 2, following up on the star-studded trio of Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, is still in the cards for Netflix.

Red Notice premiered on Netflix on November 12, 2021. While it earned mixed reviews from critics (37% critic approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes), audiences widely praised the chemistry of the three main stars.

As a result, the action movie became the most-watched film on Netflix (via Ryan Reynolds' Instagram account) during its release day, meaning that a sequel is a no-brainer.

When Will Red Notice 2 Release?

On November 9, 2021, three days before Red Notice's premiere, Dwayne Johnson, whose production company Seven Bucks served as the film's producers, told SiriusXM that "there's a good chance" that fans will see a follow-up to the film:

"I will tell you that just based off of reaction so far and what we've been able to cull from the audiences, there's a good chance that we will see a return of this."

True enough, Deadline shared in January 2022 that Netflix was in "the early stages" of planning a back-to-back filming of two Red Notice sequels, with hopes of cameras starting to roll in early 2023.

Red Notice writer and director Rawson Marshall Thurber was tapped to write the script.

Considering the busy schedules of Johnson, Gadot, and Reynolds and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, filming didn't commence at all in 2023.

Still, there was a promising update from Gal Gadot in June 2023 when she told Collider that the script for Red Notice 2 is already finished:

"We’re all talking about it. I don’t know if I can say anything! I already read the second script and it’s, whoo! We’re all very excited about it!”

Circling back to October 2022, Red Notice producer Beau Flynn told Collider that the plan to film back-to-back will depend on the scripts of the follow-ups and how the main trio feels about them:

“Well, we have a ‘Red Notice 2’ script and almost ['Red Notice'] 3. The plan is hopefully if Hiram and I have our way that we will make those movies back to back. But it’s going to be all about the scripts and how we feel and how Dwayne, Gal, and Ryan feel about them. But that franchise is a blast and obviously, Netflix really wants it, and Rawson [Marshall Thurber, director and screenwriter] is committed.”

The chances of filming back-to-back are slim in early to mid-2024 due to some factors like Reynolds' busy Deadpool 3 schedule and Johnson's potential commitment with the WWE during the Wrestlemania 40 season between March and April 2024.

Filming for Red Notice began in January 2020, but it experienced several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic which ultimately halted production in March 2020.

Production then resumed in September 2020, with it wrapping up in November.

It's possible that production for Red Notice 2 could start in late 2024, barring any setbacks.

Considering reshoots and post-production, the sequel could potentially be released in mid to late 2025, possibly following in the footsteps of the first film in November 2025.

Red Notice 2 would not be complete without its star-studded trio of Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. The three main stars are expected to return for another global heist, especially after the first film's nerve-wracking ending.

Ritu Arya, who plays Interpol inspector Urvashi Das in the first film, is also poised for a comeback after her significant involvement in the final moments of Red Notice.

Given that the first movie didn't address Sotto Voce's fate after being hit by a trapdoor in a bull ring, there is a chance that Chris Diamantopoulos could seek revenge against the trio in Red Notice 2.

Red Notice ended with several twists and turns. For starters, Dwayne Johnson's John Hartley betrayed Ryan Reynolds' Booth since he is actually in cahoots with The Bishop (Gal Gadot) all this time.

After managing to steal Cleopatra's Egg and blindsiding Booth, Hartley and The Bishop claim their $300 million reward from the Egyptian billionaire. In another shocking development, the pair outsmarted the billionaire and had him arrested by Interpol.

Fast forward to six months later, Booth crashes into Hartley and The Bishop's escape in paradise by telling them that Interpol froze their assets and they have no choice but to accept his offer of another job.

The film ends with the trio scouting their next target: the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Red Notice 2 has a unique opportunity that the first film wasn't able to deliver since the trio will be working together from the get-go instead of being on opposite sides.

Speaking with GamesRadar in November 2021, Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber addressed if the three can trust each other, teasing that "it can be tricky:"

"Can they or can't they? As the writer-director, I can't quite help myself thinking about what I want to do next. I love these characters, I love this world, I love this tone. I have an idea of what's in store for them, but I think when you put three thieves together, it can be tricky. Never trust anybody!"

It would be surprising if The Bishop decides to betray Hartley this time, forcing Booth to choose which one to trust.

Aside from the stakes of a heist and Interpol in their tail, the humor and the dynamic from its three main leads are expected to be a sight to see.

The new mission of Hartley, Bishop, and Booth could also take them into different parts of the world, similar to the globe-throttling venture of the first film which featured locations like Argentina and Eygpt.

While she's managed to stay one step ahead of his grasp, both she and infamous con man and fellow art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds), have been issued the titular "red notices" by Interpol — meaning they're two of the world's most wanted criminals. But when Hartley is forced to work together with his main targets, of course hijinks are bound to ensue, and, surprising absolutely no one, Johnson and Reynolds remain comedic gold on-screen.

Red Notice is directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who also produces the film alongside Beau Flynn for FlynnPictureCo; and Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia for Seven Bucks Productions. In addition to Reynolds, Gadot, and Johnson, Red Notice stars The Umbrella Academy's Ritu Arya as well as Chris Diamantopolous.
