David And Goliath - 1

This is a story that we have all heard and read many times. For most folks, it is a story of how an underdog, with God’s strength, can win over overwhelming odds. Or, to some, it is a story of how God fights our battles for us, so that our confidence in in our Lord, not our own capabilities. To some, this is a confirmation of what Paul learned when the Lord told him that God’s strength could only be perfected in our weaknesses. It was David’s youth, small stature, and venerability without armor that actually qualified David for this mission, because God could only work through someone who knew their limitations in themselves and knew how God could work through him with perfect strength to accomplish the mission.

But, there are a couple of additional truths we can glean from this story. The single combat of David and Goliath reminds us of the single combat between Eve and the serpent, where Eve lost and all of humanity became enslaved to sin and the devil. But, there in the Garden was a prophetic word about one to come who would crush the head of the serpent. That prophetic word was fulfilled in single combat on the cross where Jesus, the Anointed One, crushed the head of the devil to provide freedom to all mankind. David, an anointed one, crushed the head of the enemy of God’s people, giving Israel freedom from slavery. What a great type of Jesus.
