They don't just let computers scan my inbox with my name redacted (a concept I still find terrifying, by the way). They let actual people read my un-redacted emails.

Douglas MacMillan, who broke the story in the Wall Street Journal, described it as "common practice" for companies who collect data to let their employees read emails. An ex-CTO he quoted referred to it as a "dirty secret", but also, "the reality". Gmail lets these companies into our inboxes.

I know, I shouldn't be surprised. This is Google we are talking about, after all. The biggest dog of them all; frenemy of Facebook; notorious for exploiting personal information for profit and power.

I know, I shouldn't be surprised. This is 2024, after all. These days we all relinquish our right to privacy in exchange for convenience. That's why we let Google Maps, Uber, eBay and every other app know where we are all the time. That's why we say "yes" when an online quiz asks for access to our personal details.
